New Audi Q5 Range Arrives in South Africa
The all-new Audi Q5 has officially arrived in South Africa, bringing the third generation of Audi’s popular luxury midsize SUV to local roads. The new range introduces a more progressive design, a technology-focused interior and a broader choice of body styles and performance options. With pricing starting from around R1.275 million, the Q5 enters an increasingly competitive premium-SUV market alongside rivals such as the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC.
The South African range consists of four key models: the Q5 SUV, the second-generation Q5 Sportback, the high-performance SQ5 SUV and the SQ5 Sportback. This gives buyers the choice between conventional SUV practicality and the sleeker, coupe-inspired Sportback design, while the SQ5 models add considerably more performance for customers looking for a sportier driving experience.
The latest Q5 represents a significant styling evolution for Audi. Rather than radically departing from the familiar Q5 formula, the new model develops it with sharper surfaces, a wider-looking stance and more technical detailing. The front end is dominated by a new-look Singleframe grille, slim headlights and prominent air intakes, while the side profile features a pronounced shoulder line and more sculpted bodywork.
At the rear, a continuous light strip helps give the Q5 a distinctive nighttime appearance. Audi has also placed considerable emphasis on personalisation, with different lighting signatures and equipment packages allowing buyers to tailor the vehicle to their preferences. The result is a Q5 that looks more contemporary and athletic without sacrificing the understated character associated with the Audi brand.
The Q5 Sportback takes the design concept a step further. Its sloping roofline and coupe-like silhouette give it a sportier appearance than the standard SUV, while retaining the basic versatility expected from a premium family vehicle. Audi describes the Sportback as combining SUV proportions with a more dynamic roofline and muscular exterior design.
Technology takes centre stage
Inside, the biggest change is Audi's new digital cockpit. The Q5 features a curved panoramic display incorporating an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI touchscreen. The arrangement creates a wide digital interface that puts key vehicle information, navigation and entertainment functions directly in the driver's field of view.
An optional 10.9-inch passenger display is also available. Importantly, it incorporates a privacy mode designed to prevent the passenger's screen from distracting the driver. This reflects Audi's broader approach to combining increasingly sophisticated digital technology with a focus on safety and usability.
The cabin itself follows a clean, horizontal design theme, with premium materials, soft-touch controls and ambient lighting contributing to the upscale atmosphere. Audi has also retained the Q5's emphasis on everyday usability, making the new model more than simply a technology showcase.
Petrol, diesel and performance power
Unlike an increasing number of new premium SUVs, the South African Q5 launch continues to offer internal-combustion powertrains, including petrol and diesel options. This gives local buyers a choice that remains particularly relevant in a market where charging infrastructure and long-distance driving requirements can vary considerably.
At the top of the range are the SQ5 models. These use Audi's 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine, producing 270 kW and 550 Nm, with quattro all-wheel drive providing traction. The SQ5 Sportback can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, according to Audi South Africa.
The SQ5 also benefits from adaptive S air suspension, allowing the vehicle to adjust its ride characteristics according to driving conditions. This gives the performance variants a broader range of abilities, from comfortable everyday cruising to more enthusiastic driving.
South African pricing and positioning
Pricing makes the new Q5 firmly a premium proposition. Audi South Africa's current model pages list the Q5 SUV from R1.295 million, while the Q5 Sportback starts from R1.275 million. The SQ5 SUV starts at approximately R1.510 million, with the SQ5 Sportback positioned from around R1.580 million. Equipment, specifications and optional extras can affect the final purchase price.
The pricing also places the Q5 in direct competition with some of the strongest offerings in South Africa's luxury midsize-SUV segment. Audi is clearly positioning the model around a combination of technology, premium design, performance and everyday practicality rather than attempting to compete purely on price.
An important model for Audi
The Q5's arrival is particularly significant for Audi South Africa as the brand continues to refresh its local product portfolio. Audi has identified the Q5 as one of the key new models supporting its 2026 product strategy, following the introduction of the new Q3 and alongside further additions to its performance and electric-vehicle portfolios.
After more than 15 years as one of Audi's most important global nameplates, the Q5 enters its third generation with a familiar mission: to combine luxury, practicality and driving sophistication in a package suitable for everyday use. The new model's technology-heavy cabin, sharper styling and expanded range suggest Audi is aiming to keep the Q5 highly relevant as the premium SUV market evolves.
For South African buyers, the new Q5 offers a particularly broad proposition. There is the conventional Q5 for those prioritising versatility, the Sportback for customers attracted to its more fashionable design, and the SQ5 models for those who want significantly stronger performance. With modern digital technology and both petrol and diesel power available, the new range gives Audi a strong contender in one of the country's most important premium vehicle categories.
In short, the new Audi Q5 range brings a substantial technological and design upgrade while preserving the qualities that made the Q5 successful in the first place. Its arrival strengthens Audi's South African line-up and gives luxury-SUV buyers a fresh alternative at a time when the segment is becoming more competitive than ever.
